Key Messages

We encourage all our partners and members to use our key messages when communicating about physical activity.    Consistent messaging is very important for behaviour change.  Most people need to hear and see messages 3 to 4 times before they can use the information.  By collectively communicating our key messages, we can reach our goal to increase physical activity levels by 20% by 2012.   Our key messages are designed to be:
  • “Action orientated” they help people to move from knowledge to action.
  • Evidenced based – developed by health professionals.
  • Integrated - health is part of everyday living which improves quality of life.
  • Targeted to the population – not just individuals.
  • Consistent with federal guidelines.

Our Key messages are listed below.  For more details on our key messages follow the links provided after each message or group of messages.

Physical activity includes activities that you do:
  • At Work,
  • As part of your house and yard work,
  • To get you from place to place, or
  • In your spare time for recreation, exercise or sport.
Include ‘vigorous activities’ that make you breathe much harder than normal for at least 10 minutes at a time (for example: heavy lifting, digging, running, skipping or bicycling fast).

Include ‘moderate physical activities’ that make you breathe somewhat harder than normal (for example:  carrying light loads, bicycling at a regular pace, or walking).

Walk Everyday!   Take 10,000 or more steps daily.  Count Your Steps to Better Health by borrowing a pedometer from your local library.  Include walking at work and at home, walking to travel from place to place, and any other walking for recreation, sport, exercise or leisure. http://www.halton.ca/health/services/physical_activity/library_pedometer.htm
